Summer is officially here! Most people deem this season the perfect opportunity to relax and take a break from our day-to-day responsibilities. While vacation is certainly the best time to wind down, try not to neglect your teeth while enjoying your days off. Here are five summer oral health tips you can follow to keep your smile healthy all season long.

Stay On Top of Your Oral Hygiene Routine

During the summer months, it’s easy to stray away from your routine, especially when each day brings something different. However, staying on top of your dental care is critical, even while on vacation. Make sure you continue to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. If you’re traveling, pack a kit that contains your oral hygiene essentials (i.e., toothbrush, toothpaste, floss). It’ll help you stay on track while away from home.

Drink Plenty of Water

Everyone knows drinking plenty of water can quench your thirst and help you stay hydrated in hot weather. But did you know your smile depends on it too? If your mouth is too dry, harmful bacteria growth will increase and raise your risk of decay, cavities, and even gum disease. Water also helps wash away plaque-causing bacteria, sugars, and residual food particles after eating.

Limit Sugary Drinks

While lounging by the pool, it can be tempting to cool down with an ice-cold juice, soda, lemonade, or sports drink. Unfortunately, these drinks are highly concentrated with sugar and can wreak havoc on your teeth, leading to tooth decay and enamel erosion. Protect your grin by limiting your consumption of sweet beverages. If you must indulge, use a straw to minimize contact.

Eat Healthy Snacks

Carrots, celery, apples, plain yogurt, whole-grain crackers, and plain nuts are nutritious foods that benefit your mouth and body!

Ideally, you should be visiting your dentist bi-annually for a cleaning and exam. Well, since you have a more open schedule, summer is the perfect time for a routine visit! Your dentist will remove any plaque and tartar that can infect your gum tissue and perform a thorough oral evaluation.
